When the leaves are young, they are pinkish and have a turpentine-like scent. As they become older, they become glossy, leathery dark green leaves with a yellow midrib. The fruit is round in shape. Fruit that isn't ripe looks green. Its hue shifts from pink as it ages to a brilliant crimson red and then back to black. White-colored fruit is produced by a tree variety. The fruit tends to turn the tongue purple and has a flavor that is sweet, slightly acidic, and astringent.
