Senecio rowleyanus “String of Pearls” 10-15cm spread
Native to South Africa, Senecio rowleyanus, also known as String of Pearls, String of Peas, or String of Beads, grows as a creeping vine on the ground in its natural habitat, its stems crawling and roots anywhere they come into contact with the earth. Typically, they are shielded from the sun by larger plants or rocks and thrive in the shade. They acquire a common name. These rounded leaves, which resemble little green peas, produce beads or peas. The succulent, drought-tolerant quality of these round, pea-like leaves is due to their ability to retain water. Additionally, the tiny, spherical leaves include "windows," which resemble tiny openings in the middle of the leaves. Light is allowed in through these windows for photosynthesis.
