Sarracenia Purpurea or American Pitchers
Sarracenia, the North American pitcher plants, are originating in the US Gulf Coast states and all along the East Coast, from Eastern Texas through to Florida, and north through the New England states and the Southern provinces of Canada. In the far east of British Columbia, there is even a single natural population! The pitcher-shaped leaves of these plants give rise to their name. By creating nectar around the edge of their pitchers, they attract insects. An insect reaches into the pitcher to try and collect more nectar after it has begun to sip it. It just falls in when it loses its balance! Insects cannot scuttle out of the pitcher because of its extremely smooth inner walls. Additionally, because a tube lacks airlift, they are unable to take off by air! When the bug eventually perishes, the plant takes its nutrients directly through its leaves as it breaks down.
