Mangifera indica Or Mango Tree
The Mangifera indica, or mango tree, is an upright tree that grows to a height of 30 to 100 feet (about 10 to 30 meters). It has an oval, rather slender crown and a broad, rounded canopy that can grow to a width of 100 to 125 feet (30 to 38 meters) with age. The taproot can reach a depth of 20 feet (6 inches) in deep soil. Additionally, the feeder root system spreads widely and produces numerous anchor roots that pierce several feet into the earth. The tree has a lengthy lifespan; specimens that are 300 years old and still bearing fruit have been reported. There is a solitary, flattened, oval or kidney-shaped, occasionally somewhat extended, longitudinally ribbed, pale yellowish-white, somewhat woody stone. It could be almost completely free of fibers, or it could have a beard of long or short fibers sticking to the body cavity along one side. Within the stone is the starchy seed, monoembryonic (usually single-sprouting) or polyembryonic (usually producing more than one seedling).”
